Chocolate Turtle

Elias and Cara are visiting Elias's new cousin in New Mexico right now, but I miss them, so here's a post. The turtle is from some stand or another at The Bite - my folks came up to visit last weekend and we went down there for a little while.

When I talked to Elias on the phone the other day, I asked him if he'd had anything good to eat, and he told me that they'd had a little picnic, and then "we continued our journey." What an amazing little person.

Father's Day 2009

I'm afraid we didn't get a picture of Elias - the one posted is from a visit to the zoo that we made last week - but it's been a splendid Father's Day. Elias couldn't wait until this morning to give me the gift that he'd picked out, so last night I received a copy of Weapons & Fighting Techniques of the Samurai Warrior. Thank you very much, young man. We also spent most of the morning walking the route for the North Sunday Parkways, which was very pleasant, and Elias did an impressive amount of the walking himself.

Oh, and speaking of weapons and fighting techniques...

Shoes

About a month ago, Mormor sent Elias two pairs of shoes. He loved them... or at least one of the pairs. Since then I've also bought him pair of sandals for the summer. He refuses to wear anything but the one pair sent by Mormor. Today I really wanted him to wear one of the other pairs of shoes. It was a silly argument, but his favored shoes are getting really scuffed and it seems like a wasted to just let the other shoes sit there.

Elias got very upset at my attempts to try to force him to wear his other shoes. He told me that the shoes he likes to wear are his fast shoes and the other shoes make him fall. He then proceeded to demonstrate this wearing his green shoes-- he put on the shoes and started running, then suddenly fell down. It must be true! I made him show Harry and the same thing happened: three steps and then his legs inexplicably collapsed under him. At this point I was amused but also a little frustrated.

"Fine," I said, "Wear your damn shoes!"

"Mom, they're not damn shoes! The other ones are damn!"

Then being very grown-up about the whole thing, I laughed and said, "No, you're damn."

Elias was obviously not happy about this. "No, mom, you're damn! And you don't look cool."

Notice the pristine shoes and victorious Elias.

Mighty Timbers

Last night we went out to the first Timbers home game, which Elias has been eagerly anticipating all week. He had a great time; he likes to watch the game, of course, but also really likes all the commotion around the game - smoke bombs, bouncing balloons around the crowd, some very enthusiastic chanting, etc. As you can see from this photo, though, he was pretty wiped out by the end of the night.
